In 2024, Belgian companies’ inventors filed a record-breaking 2,615 patent applications which represented a 5% increase compared to the previous year. “We’re proud to say Umicore played a significant role in this milestone, reinforcing our status as a driving force behind Belgium’s dynamic innovation ecosystem”, said Stijn, IP Manager at Umicore.

Stijn explained that with over 7,500 patents in our global intellectual property portfolio, 4,122 of which have been granted, Umicore continues to shape the future through meaningful technological breakthroughs. “In Belgium alone, our patent activity stands as a benchmark of excellence in advanced material products and metallurgy, a field that contributes 7% of all national filings. Our work supports progress in other key sectors like clean mobility , organic chemistry, and civil engineering, showing the broad impact of our innovations”.
