About the context
Umicore is deploying a new data analytics platform combined with a Data Mesh architecture and governance model. This approach is designed to streamline the way of working and maximize value for both Business Units and the Group by enabling them to fully leverage their data assets. While our data mesh strategy focuses on establishing strong governance and business ownership in a domain-drive approach, or new data platform aims to enhance business insights and drive value through digital initiatives like Analytics, Data Science, and AI.
About the Role
This data platform in Azure is based on dbt, Databricks, and Azure Data Factory. It enables our Business Units make the most of their data by creating solutions that enhance business insights and drive value through digital initiatives like Analytics, Data Science, and AI. The job opening is in the Data Solutions Center of Excellence, which provides tooling and technical capabilities to the teams that develop and run data products. Additionally, the team provides technical lead expertise to the build-and-run teams.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Technical Specialist to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in guiding and coaching our data engineers while continuously improving our data platform. Your focus will be the BI tech lead role on the short and mid-term, with the opportunity on the longer term to cross-cover platform capability development.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Lead the design, development, and implementation of data engineering solutions using dbt, Databricks, and Azure.
- Mentorship and Coaching: Provide guidance and support to data engineers, helping them develop their skills and achieve their professional goals.
- Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders, to understand data requirements and deliver solutions.
- Best Practices: Establish and promote best practices for data engineering, including coding standards, testing, documentation, and version control.
- Security and Compliance: Ensure data security and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
- Standards Definition: Define and enforce standards for branching strategy, CI/CD pipelines, naming conventions, and Python coding practices.
- Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to data pipelines, data quality, and platform performance as 3rd line support.
- Platform Improvement: Continuously evaluate and enhance the data platform to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance. Collaborate with the Infrastructure team for the creation and maintenance of Terraform templates and deployment of data products.
- Innovation: Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies, and drive innovation within the team.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on dbt, Databricks, and Azure.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIT, SQL, dbt, Python, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, CI/CD, Azure. Experienced with data mesh and data product solution design including dimensional modelling, object-level security, row-level security, ...
- Leadership Skills: Proven experience in non-hierarchical leadership and mentoring of technical teams.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues.
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Personality: Enjoy working with people, service-minded towards customers while guarding good practices in coding and security.
You will be a team member of the Data Solutions Center of Excellence, in Corporate Information Systems. You will report hierarchically to the Head of Business Applications.
Location will be Brussels. Travel to the other Umicore sites might be required on occasional basis.
