About the context

Umicore is deploying a new data analytics platform combined with a Data Mesh architecture and governance model. This approach is designed to streamline the way of working and maximize value for both Business Units and the Group by enabling them to fully leverage their data assets. While our data mesh strategy focuses on establishing strong governance and business ownership in a domain-drive approach, or new data platform aims to enhance business insights and drive value through digital initiatives like Analytics, Data Science, and AI.

About the role:

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Team Lead to join our Data Solutions Center of Excellence. This role will be key in the delivery of state-of-the-art data solutions: it will focus on the central team of data engineers; ensure the Build & Run of the central Harmonized Data Products; set guidelines and templates for data engineers; collaborate with Business Units teams and enable the delivery of local Federated Data Products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Management: Lead and manage a team of data engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Resource Allocation and Capacity Planning: Allocate data engineers to different POD teams based on project requirements and business priorities.
  • Training and Development: Define and implement a training path for new data engineering resources, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
  • External Partner Management: Manage relationships with external partners to handle capacity peaks, ensure project continuity and transition to operation.
  • Standards and Best Practices: Define and enforce ways of working, including documentation standards and development practices for data engineers.
  • Build & Run Harmonized Data Products: Oversee the POD working on Harmonized Data Products, ensuring alignment with our Data Mesh strategy and delivering high-quality data solutions.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other team leads, business stakeholders, and technical teams to ensure seamless project execution and alignment with business goals.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and drive initiatives to enhance team efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in data engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of data engineering concepts, data modelling and data mesh. Experience with SQL, dbt, Databricks, Python and Azure cloud services is highly desirable.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven experience in managing and leading technical teams, with strong people management and mentoring skills.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under tight deadlines.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and build strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues.

You will lead the Central Factory team in the Data Solutions Center of Excellence. You will report hierarchically to the Head of Business Applications in Corporate Information Systems. 

The location will be Brussels. Travel to the other Umicore sites might be required on occasional basis.
